Buddy and Transition programs

At Dederang Primary School we value the importance of the transition between pre-school and school. We strive to ensure that every child experiences a smooth and positive start to school. Our Buddy Program supports all Foundation children commencing school by creating nurturing relationships between students in DPS Care and our Primary School, ensuring that students feel safe and confident in their new environment.

Each year in Term 3, our senior students are paired up with a pre-school student from DPS Care and commence building positive relationships in the classroom and in the school yard. In Term 4 the pre-school children attend 5 transition days, spread over the term. The senior students will greet their buddy, play with them and offer support in the yard during break times. This support will continue at the start of the following school year.

Grade 6 to Grade 7

Year 6 students commencing Secondary School are required to cope with a very different environment. New subjects, new teachers, new structures and new friends add up to some big new challenges. It is our responsibility to make this experience both comfortable and exciting.

Our aim is to provide a smooth and efficient transition from Primary School to Secondary School with additional support provided to those who require it.

As part of the transition from Year 6 to Year 7, Dederang PS students participate in organised programs with local Secondary Schools. Within our school context, numerous social and leadership programs are provided for Year 6 students that will support and prepare them for a smooth transition into secondary school.

We communicate with a number of high schools to ensure that our enrolled students do not miss any transition opportunity.
